Local writing group, Licuala Writers, are planning their first open public reading for Saturday 19th of September at 10.00am. To be held at the Dorothy Jones Library in Tully, they are inviting all members of the community to participate by way of reading their own original work or coming along to listen and enjoy. The word event has been themed Into Orbit to help inspire would be writers, poets, rappers and songsters to get creative. All are asked to submit their work by 8th September so that sufficient time can be allocated for them to read.

Group facilitator Dr June Perkins said of the event “Licuala Writers invite original stories, raps, songs, poems, reflections, essays, on the theme of Into Orbit: Orbiting into a new phase of life, orbiting out of an old phase of life, reflecting on our place in the cosmos, anything at all that makes you think of orbiting, moving, changing or transforming. All ages are welcome to submit.” Participants’ work will be published in the event program and may also be included in an anthology planned for publication in 2010.

Work that has been previously published is acceptable and due recognition to previous publisher will be given where appropriate.

The Licuala Writers meet each month, alternating between Tully and Mission Beach. Within the group are keen writers of fiction, non-fiction, journalism, blogging, poetry and children’s writing. All interested in the event are encouraged to visit their Into Orbit blog at Into Orbit If you can’t make it to read, why not submit something anyway and we will read it for you, if selected, and place it on our website.
