Fathomless

What is this fathomless and
           surging Ocean?
                 
Can you hear it 
          in the flooding rivers and creeks?
                 Brisbane is upturned.

Can you see it 
        in the tears of hiding children 
        in tunnels of Ukraine?
        
A child sings her nation and 
      everyone knows her name 
          for a moment.

Can you touch its life vein
         when tears are thickened
                from all that threatens life?

Surging trouble, deeper, harsher, 
          cutting into skin and bone
                removing every comfort of home 
                 every wall, door, window
                 streetscapes scarred.

Where is this feeling 
       that just nearby are 
               loved ones ?
          
Sending them letter like prayers
            framed by the eternal postman
can I  wish 
              reach
                partake
                     take deep breaths ...
                          
 Pause 

                  behold ...
                       astonishment
Feel
bounty rush closer
                glorious...

Years Old: Hyphen or No Hyphen?

This post teaches when to hyphenate the phrases years old and year old.

Let’s take a look at two sentences:

His son is four years old.
He has a four year old boy.

In the first sentence, you would not use hyphens. In the second sentence, you would, making it four-year-old boy. This is because the phrase four year old is modifying the noun boy.

A good clue to determine whether you should hyphenate the year old phrase is to see if a noun comes after it. If there is a noun, hyphenate:

six-year-old toy
fifty-year-old whiskey
eight-year-old cat

If the sentence is simply stating that someone or something is so many years old, then don’t use a hyphen:

Her dad turned sixty years old today.
His baseball card is seventy…

Lights Leviathan

AUSTRALIAN FAIRY TALES: FLESH OR FOSSIL?

October 1-2, 2022 at Brisbane’s South Bank precinct

The Australian Fairy Tale Society investigates and creates fairy tales from an Australian perspective. Local Fairy Tale Rings gather in person and via Zoom to explore specific fairy tales. We have mined rich themes at previous conferences, and celebrate members’ talents through our eZine and a new anthology, ‘South of the Sun: Australian Fairy Tales for the 21st Century’.

Invitation

As always our focus is on the Australian interpretation of fairy tales, particularly contemporary multicultural, diverse Australia. As AFTS Conference-goers delight in diversity, we are looking for –

Talks of no more than 25 minutes, including Q&A
Case studies of projects, with a fairy tale basis
Performances of no more than 10 minutes, with an option for 5 minutes’ Q&A
Panel discussions of no more than 25 minutes, including Q&A

Reflecting at midpoints

I have reached almost the mid point of the masters in teaching.

This term has been all about learning and development theories – and understanding how to develop a growth mindset, and see how empowering a teacher can be through the power of modelling the attitudes and skills they want to see in their students – as well as empowering the autonomy and independence their students will need in life. Bandura, Dweck, and others have lit the way.

I am contemplating taking a brief break from studies, to take a deep breath before the home straits. I am keen to do creative writing and study for my numeracy test. All teachers have to sit compulsory literacy and numeracy tests. I was confident and completed the literacy one, but I do have to brush up on my numeracy skills to ensure they are reasonable.
