Mini Photography Exhibition – University of Queensland

Art Work Pictured Left to Right – World is Mirage, Divine Bird, and River of Everlasting Life.

After two weeks of exhibitions of the team of Illumine in Ashgrove Brisbane, and Ashmore, Gold Coast, creatives from the project took our art works to our local communities.

This image is of three of June Perkins photographs with accompanying poems at a celebration held the University of Queensland.

The photographs sparked many conversations, with the major response being they possessed tranquility and beauty. ‘The River of Everlasting Life’  photograph especially evoked a strong response from attendees. After looking at the art many attendees chose to read the poetry collection, The Dreamers.  They also approached the artist to share stories of photographers in  their families and their responses to the various photographs.

Freedom to Respond to Art

Be Illumined

June Perkins, author, poet, blogger, photographer and videographer, workshopped with attendees to create poetry in response to art and photography. Her latest workshop, Writing Poetry in Response to Art, showed how visual art could inspire poetry. Aspiring and emerging writers and poets were given an insight into thinking differently about writing poetry. This event was part of the mini Illumine Festival on 6-8th October, 2017 at Magda Community Artz, Brisbane.

This was a thought-provoking workshop which allowed one the freedom to write without boundaries. The creation of poetry or pieces of writing from a photograph/visual art piece was liberating. It allowed words to tumble onto the page from what was observed, sensed and heard within. It motivated one to write unhindered. To explore poetry with a new insight and confidence was decluttering and a freeing experience. This form of Art Therapy would fit well into Health and Well-being workshops…
