Neighbourhood Songs (1)

Playful cockatoos

My neighbourhood is full of birds, cockatoos, ibis, magpies and pigeons.

The magpie song, will be one I can never forget

It has people who care about others in the street.

Who might even lay down their lives for each other

if something fearful should be whispering in the streets

The listener on the doorstep, who feeds all the birds, and takes our bins in and out.

A neighbour full of stories and care.

It has people who left who come back to check on people in the street

because their Nana told them too.

It now has claimed my life for nearly seven years.

It is an old tumbledown house, fixed up rental, made as loving as at it can be.

The people inside are more important than the walls surrounding them.

It is a backyard full of songs and stories, and people watching the stars.

It is a place where the broken hearted gather in their search to be strong.

It is Ridvan stories written on the pavements in multi-coloured chalk.

It is walking with writing friends and their dogs

praying in the park with friends.

It is the place where two books are born and created.

It is the last place my eldest son will live with us before heading off into the world.

It is a place where we discuss world unity, and what will cure COVID 19 and all the other world’s ills.

It is the place of visiting musicians from around the globe, filling our hearts with stories.

My neighbourhood is

a place where people leave shimmers in each other’s lives.

But how can it be closer?

How can it be a hub of unity in diversity?

That Day

That day when we ran into
watch tv
the black and white of
Sesame St
now full colour

was jump up and down on the couch
joy.

That day when someone looked at
me and said
you can’t talk to me
you are not my friend

was tears.

That day when my friend
made a necklace for me out
of fimo and it was frangipanis

the past was lost
and part of me was healed.

That day when someone tried
to break into our house
and our friends arrived
before the police did
and stayed to make us tea
when the intruder was taken away

was scarier than a cyclone
and preparation.

That day when I found out
I could write and research
the rest of a history story
I had been waiting to do so for
twenty years

was a story saying
I bless you
to share me.

That day I told my story
about Yasi
to help others
I began to let it go.

Innovation

9781741140156

I am currently trying simultaneous narratives as suggested by Hazel Smith in The Writing Experiment, Strategies for Innovative Creative Writing – and having a great time innovating my poetry practice with this kind of structure.

I love the idea of a poem that can read in three ways!

I can’t share this work yet as I am submitting it to places for publication or competitions, but yesterday was a fabulous poetry morning, and I drafted a long piece with a series of poetic variations drawing upon some of my favourite plants and music.

How do you innovate your poetry practice?

It’s only the beginning

I can’t censor it
my imaginary name for you
forward rolls out of my mouth
‘Dan Nomad.’

You laugh at my guess
at your name, shake your head
‘Jackson Wheeler’ you gently reply.

‘The Deborah Conway song
‘It’s only the Beginning’
pops into my head
my mind is lost
daisy chains are made

I am doing cartwheels in the park
diving into multicoloured
rippled water
are you my ‘love of a life time?’

I am already walking
hand in hand with you
my butterfly man

I see our children’s
fingers
intertwined with ours

this is our beginning

Jackson Wheeler I think I knew even then
you were the one
my sweetest day dream …
